Raven stayed in bed as much as possible, as per Ruby’s orders, and Jade spent as much of that time beside Raven as she could. It was partially to help her stave off the pain, and partially to remove that last wall that was blocking Raven from completely trusting the pack.

The others had taken very quickly to the idea that Raven was to become part of the pack. It’d taken a long explanation of Jade’s ability to detect no lie in the omega’s words or admissions in order for them to believe it, but they hadn’t opposed protecting her if need be against Ray. A corrupt mating would bind even the most opposing shifters together. Shifters followed old lore like the Bible to an avid Christian.

Their lore was the only thing that they were able to keep from the old times when they’d been part of the outside world and could walk freely among humans. Everything else had been stowed away to make them appear more human and blend in with human culture. It was survival, and survival meant adapting.

As the days passed, Raven became stronger and she and Jade talked as much as they were silent. As Jade told Raven about growing up in the huge ranch and about their everyday life, she felt the shifter slowly relaxing. They both were lost in their own thoughts much of the time as well—not an uncomfortable silence, but silence all the same. Jade was almost always touching Raven to keep the pain away so that her wound could properly heal.

It was the third night that, when Jade asked Raven what it had been like growing up in Ray’s pack.

“I wouldn’t know,” Raven replied. “My parents were drifters. We never stayed in one place for long.”

Jade sucked in a breath. “Then you’ve never really had a pack.”

“I supposed not.” Raven shrugged, as if she hadn’t just revealed that she’d missed out on one of the most basic elements of shifter life. No wonder Raven was so closed off and seemed as though she’d never trusted anyone in her life—she probably hadn’t.

“I’m going to show you what being part of a pack is really like,” Jade said softly, and they fell into comfortable, soothing silence, Jade stroking Raven’s soft skin until the other woman seemed to slip into sleep.

Jade stood to return to her room when Raven reached up and wrapped her fingers around the alpha’s wrist. “Stay,” she whispered. That single word was filled with such emotion that it took Jade a moment to soak it all in. It was a proposition, and a sign of the last of Raven’s mistrust ebbing away. Jade’s skin ignited at the point of contact between her wrist and Raven’s fingers.

Jade nodded, and after a few moments Raven let go of her wrist. Jade attempted to comprehend the expression in the half-light on Raven’s face, but it was hard. She’d learned to read Raven’s face better, but the omega had an exceptionally good command over her expressions and only let Jade know her emotions if she wished them revealed.
